The Heart Of Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Heart Of Fall 111421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

In the days of fading glory the young dogwoods hold their leaves as long as they can. As I sit quietly beneath the scarlet hue of its heart shaped leaves the sun musters it’s remaining strength to warm earth, this body of clay and the soul that animates it. In the distance I hear the winter birds gathered in celebration of their season. Another crimson leaf drops to the ground. Like watching sand flow in an hourglass the leaves continue to drop as each tree bids the world goodnight and goes to sleep. Rest well little dogwoods. Build your strength for a glorious bloom in Spring.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Of Light And Flow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “November’s Window 111121a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool mists embrace the mountain as I sit quietly and allow my spirit to listen a while. The little spot on the edge of my property is my low sanctuary but higher up on the mountain is my high sanctuary. This is the place where I learned to allow the outside world to drift away with the misty rain and center myself in nature. The scent of earth is carried in the mists and the sound of small creatures playing in the forest floods my attention for a little while. The soft omnipresent glow of the sun lights up each remaining leaf and in that light the forest is transformed into a world with no less beauty than staind glass. The concept of flow was recently reintroduced to me. It’s a surprisingly simple concept and yet difficult to define. And yet in these secluded spots the flow of life is found. And as difficult as I find it to explain I know it when it’s there. One person said that it’s not the river but the current within the water. So for the moment I’ll say that it’s not the light but the illumination that defines flow in this moment.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Forage Friday #129 Mountain Arnica

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image, “Mountain Arnica 91821”, was taken specifically for Forage Friday and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice.

⚠️ WARNING, Arnica Montana contains the toxic component “helenalin” which can be poisonous if eaten in large quantities. Contact with the plant can cause dermatitis.

Tonight’s post is going to be fairly short as I don’t have any food uses for tonight’s plant. I had always thought that Arnica was a western species until it literally popped up at my doorstep. This happy little yellow plant is the same thing that’s in Arnica gel which is found on pharmacy shelves.

Arnica Montana is listed as being native to Europe and is one of the plants that’s known as wolve’s bane. ( The other one that I’m aware of is monkshood)

Mountain Arnica is traditionally used topically to treat bruises, arthritis, sprain and strained muscles and is considered anti-inflammatory in spite of also having a reputation for causing a rash. Some scientists say that Arnica helps by stimulating circulation to the treated area.

That’s it for tonight’s #foragefriday. As we enter the dormant period in my part of the Appalachian Mountains finding new subjects to photograph and post becomes increasingly challenging. My original goal was find at least 100 useful plants growing locally and provide something interesting to read about. It’s possible that I’ll have to skip Forage Friday until the Spring. There would be a post on Friday but it would be a different topic.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Collected Blessings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Collected Blessings 102821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The crisp breeze sweeps the forest floor and the fallen leaves begin to dance. They’re collected in groups like the warm memories of summer’s pleasure. And though nature reclaims the shells of the canopy turning them into duff and humus the essence of memory remains as an intangible echo of those days. The quiet spots where the outside world can’t follow still hold the power of a peaceful moment as the smoke of a warm hearth delights the soul. Small voices carried in the wind sing joyfully and tell me that my friends the sparrows are back from summer vacation. The firey flash of brilliant red feathers plays in the thicket a little further up the mountain. It’s said that when you see the cardnial that angles are watching you. And my friend the chickadee has also returned to playfully return my calls in morning’s welcomed light. The changing seasons come each with their own blessings and it’s time to welcome them home.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Listening To The Voices Of The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Autumn’s Call 102621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Forest has a voice of its own that’s beyond the sounds of songbirds and insects. When they’re silent music still comes from the mountains. The breathy whistle of the wind in the trees, the rhythm of falling leaves or rain depending on the season and the creaking groans of wood as it stretches and twists all come together during the peak color season. It’s on days like this that the mountains sing and tell stories to those who sit quietly and listen. Some of the oaks tell me about how much it tickles as the squirrels run up and down their trunks. The maples nod in agreement as golden leaves flow from their crowns adding more rhythm to the music. The oldest elm on the mountain whispers of the secret owls nest in the hollow of her ancient bole and how it makes her feel needed so she guards the nest well. The birches tell me how they hold back the mountain in their roots and keep the big rocks from rolling downhill. These and many other stories are shared in the fading light of late October as I sit on the tailgate of the big blue truck and just listen.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
