Red-winged Blackbirds Of April 2020

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Male Red-winged Blackbird 41120”. All of the photos are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article

The bright Spring sun fills the Marsh and I bring the big blue truck to a halt on the edge of the single lane road. The windows hum as they slide down into the doors. I have come specially for the Red-winged Blackbirds and I have a secret weapon to bring them in. A digital recording of a male singing. With the windows down and the volume on 10 I start the playback and quietly sip my coffee. It’s not long before there’s a rustling sound in the cattails to my left.

Image Titled “Female Red-winged Blackbird 4420a

The marsh is full of Red-winged Blackbirds and I’ve gotten the attention of a female. Like most birds the females color scheme is all about camouflage. Her reply to the song is few chirps followed by a high pitched cackle. She stays low in the reeds for most of encounter. Meanwhile, her boyfriend is not happy about a new singer on his stage and he isn’t shy about challenging the unseen newcomer.

He stays on the tops of the cattails showing his red and calling his long trilling song.

The Female, sensing how close her boyfriend was to ritual combat moved a little deeper into the cattails.

The the male finally zeroed in on source of the strange voice in his marsh. He came in like a fighter jet. He was so quick and agile that I couldn’t get him in frame. At one point I thought that he was coming in the window. But he pulled up short deftly landed on the cattail that was only a few feet from my window.

He took several hard looks into the cab of the truck from his perch.

I suppose that he couldn’t figure out if I was a really big bird or something else.

Eventually I turned the soundtrack off and that’s when he turned back to his love. In his mind he’d vanquished his rival.

Image Titled “She Waits”

It was only after the male returned to her side that she moved out of the hiding place and back to top of the cattails.

With the lovers reunited it was time for the big blue truck to move on. As I pulled out a final glance into the rearview mirror revealed that the two birds were perched together.

Afternoon Stroll

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Afternoon Stroll 3820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Softly and cautiously the little doe picks her way through the brambles. The March wind has dried up the soggy ground and the sun gives her a welcomed warmth. The previous days were dark and cold with precious little to browse. But with the arrival of the sun the buds have lost their hard scales and offered her the tender morsels on the tips of the lower branches. This nutrition is desperately needed by the new life growing inside of her. Her yearling fawn follows just inside the trees watching her and learning what is good to feed on this time of year. There’s so much to learn and she has to get it right the first time because next year’s generation will depend on the yearling for wisdom and knowledge. Both deer tremble slightly as they pass by the big blue truck stopped in the middle of the road. Here on the outskirts of the capital city they are seldom chased but the instinct to flee is strong. The mother doe casts a glance back to young one and together they move behind the scrubby bushes near the road. Not wanting to disturb their meal any further, I allow engine to carry me forward at idle speed. Perhaps if they aren’t pressured they’ll allow me to get closer next time.

Forage Friday #48 Mint

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Rest & Healing” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

There’s not many life experiences that I enjoy more than the smell of the wild peppermint on a humid July afternoon. I enjoy it so much that I combed through weeds along my creek and collected the peppermint to transplant to the edges of my garden. It wasn’t long before the peppermint just went crazy and took over the whole vegetable bed. Then it outpaced the grass in that section of the yard. And I loved every bit of it! I carefully kept the mint out of vegetables by removing the whole plant and keeping the stems and leaves to cure by hanging upside down in a cool dark place. We have a tendency to say that we “dry” the leaves and roots that we use for teas but when it’s done right it’s more of a curing process that preserves the oils in the plant. When you search the internet for ways to cure fresh mint leaves most of them involve heat. It’s suggested to put them in oven or even the microwave but I’ve never really trusted this. The mint oil is volatile and dissipates when heated. Drying the leaves with heat will make your house smell good but that smell is the very oils that you re trying to preserve escaping into the atmosphere. A slower, cooler process means that the leaves will retain more of the oils. How long to hang them really depends on the environment. In humid air it’s going to take a little longer than if the weather is dry. In general, a couple of days should be good. Just keep an eye on them and when they have the texture and feel of a good tea they’re ready. They should be dry enough to prevent mold. You can place the cured leaves in a clean mason jar but don’t screw the lid down too tight. The jar can still have moisture in it and set up conditions for mold to grow.

The reasons for foraging any wild mint should be pretty obvious. Mints are big part of tea blends and candies but it’s also a big part some high end Gourmet food. I like my meals pretty simple but I’ve seen different mints incorporated in salads, pastas, fish and of course mint and lamb is a classic combination.

Medical uses are also pretty well known. Mints were and still are one of the mainstays of herbalism. Menthol is known to have antiseptic properties and mint was used to wash wounds to prevent infections. In researching for this article I even came across a commercial product that uses peppermint oil as a base for sterilizing textiles.

As a digestive aid peppermint is said to relax the digestive muscles and provide relief from dyspepsia.

Mints are also used in balms which was the inspiration for the title of tonight’s feature image. I couldn’t help but think about the need for healing when I noticed the condition of the little butterfly’s wings. I had to wonder if he landed on the mints to sooth his tattered wings.

Peppermint and mints in general are said to be antiviral and specifically the milder herpes viruses that cause cold sores.

One of the things that I like to use the wild mints for is pest control. When outdoors in places where I’m likely to encounter mosquitoes and gnats I rub down with a few mint leaves to keep them at bay. A good trick that I picked up from Tom Brown Jr’s books is to stuff a few mint leaves into the trim on a hat and that reduces the number of gnats in my face. A simple spray of lemon scented herbs such as Spicebush leaves and mints can be misted around camps and picnic areas. Make a tincture of the herbs by soaking them in vodka or grain alcohol for several days. Then I’d mix it 50/50 with water and place it in misting bottle and refresh as needed.

I suppose that a whole series could be done on mints and we may revisit them at a later date.

My Forage Friday posts are really just to get people interested enough to look up what these plants can be used for and to share ideas so please remember to do further research and never rely on a single source for information. I’m not a medical professional so any of the medicinal uses stated here are just anecdotal.

The Morning Smile

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Morning Smile 3320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The saturated earth gives slightly as I tread out to my thinking spot. The warm day and time of year makes me a little more cautious about where I step just in case one of our pit vipers has awakened from hibernation early. I was on my way to to practice some long exposure techniques on the little drainage ditch that runs off of my mountain and into Little Elk Creek. And there it was. The smile from nature that I’ve been longing for since Christmas. The Harbinger Of Spring. To give you an idea of how small the flowers are the black speck is a flea beetle and about 1/10 of an inch long. The plant is also known as Pepper and Salt and the scientific name is Erigenia Bulbosa but I am partial to Harbinger Of Spring. According to Wikipedia it is the first wildflower to bloom in Spring but I’m a little dubious about the accuracy since my fly honeysuckle started opening a few days ago. Nevertheless, it is a most welcomed sight. It means that I’ll soon be seeing the Carolina Spring Beauty, Fiddleheads ( young fern fronds ) and the Trillium.

One thing that I agree with Wikipedia on is the importance of these tiny flowers for solitary bees like the mason bees that will emerge from their holes into a harsh world. Before 1622 solitary bees were the main pollenators in North America. It stands to reason that their lifestyle would be closely tied to early blooming plants like Harbinger Of Spring. I have looked around the area where I found this one and it seems to be the very first one to pop up on my place. It also wasn’t there yesterday ( or at least it wasn’t in bloom) because I was in the same spot and actually looking for any changes to forest floor. But from this day forward I expect to see life explode onto the scene.

Little Mr. Big Voice

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Black Capped Chickadee 22520” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the morning sun makes it way to the top of my mountain the surrounding forest is alive with the chatter of birds. If I close my eyes and concentrate on it I can filter out the individuals even if I can’t see them. One of those voices stands out really strong. I can tell that he’s somewhere near the top of my box elder but I can’t find him with my eyes. That’s not really surprising because he’s only the size of an extra large hen’s egg. For a moment his call is an alarm call until I mimic his previous pattern with whistles. I’ve always paid attention to the little birds in my area but it’s only recently that I’ve began to actively feed them and try to draw them in closer. I have had food out for them since fall but they seemed to reject it until the past few weeks. I stepped over to the feeder and made sure that the seed had not gotten wet and clogged up the reservoir catching any seed that fell out in my cupped hand at depositing it back on top of the feeder. I gave a few random whistles and stepped away. Almost as soon as I did I heard the rapid beating of tiny wings as they fluttered by behind me. As I turned he actually came in a little closer and lit in the Alder next to my driveway. He flew back and forth between the feeder and the Alder several times looking right at me as he did. I realized that this was a statement of gratitude and he was actively associating my presence with the food he was enjoying.

Since then I’ve learned that Chickadees actually have a complex language and that they actually have to teach these language skills to their young. It’s also known that as humans we can’t really pick up on the subtleties of their complex calls. Sure. I can mimic the high low patterns and approximate the rhythms but I can’t do it precisely and the context of the meaning is lost on me. So I’ve downloaded some guides and samples of the Chickadee songs and hope to at least learn which calls mean danger, happy, love etc. And perhaps soon I can call them in close enough for a detailed portrait. For now I’ll just settle for the occasional game of peekaboo in my Alder tree.
