Pursuing A Challenge

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Breath Of Spring 41921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Sometimes life just bursts onto the scene in its full glory. Other times it seems to amble up in it own sweet time.  Such is the case with the local Dogwoods and the Eastern Towhee. Most of the Dogwoods nearby are either on a neighbor’s property or on a steep embankment that makes dragging a heavy pack of photography equipment risky for both the lens and the photographer. I do have access to a few that are fairly easy to reach but they’re higher elevation and won’t be ready for a closeup for a while. One of the great advantages of living in the mountains is that if I miss a chance in the lower landscape I can get a second chance in a few days.  As I stood on my property line and calmed my mind to open my senses the Eastern Towhee whose been spotted at my feeders can be heard but not seen. His beautiful trills seem to echo from every tree but are strongest coming from the thicket about sixty feet up the mountain. A bench in the hill blocks my view of the spot and so I sit and listen. Eventually I hear the flutter of wings and he moves like a living missile through the bush coming to rest in the large Dogwood Tree on the other side of the creek. Or so I thought. The tiny bird didn’t stay long enough to focus the lens but he did draw my attention to the Dogwood in full bloom. In some ways I’m glad he got away again leaving me with a challenge to pursue all season.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Echoes Of Spring & The Flilling Of The Lake

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Echoes Of Spring 41321” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Forest edges come to life in the glow of the new light. As the sun flows through the hills surrounding the lake more of the tiny buds open like sleepy eyes on the perfect morning. Slowly the delicate pedals unfurl to welcome visitors that come on lacy wings. Woodpeckers drum the sides of dead wood in the distance in a conversation carried out over nature’s telegraph. The tales they tell are of the coming days of lush green leaves and voices in the forest. Steadily the water recovers the sunken world of the lake bottom. The large rocks and high cliffs yield only to the swelling Gauley River as it fills the land that once was. I look forward to the filling of the lake. Not just the return of the water to summer pool but to the filling of the water with boats and the laughter of the lives as they paddle about the edges.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Life Begins Anew

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Life Begins Anew 33021” and is available for purchase by clicking on the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As the new light fills my landscape the waking forest begins to send out new life. For the first year ever my volunteer apple tree has produced bloom on every branch. The sweet blossoms are absolutely alive with bumblebees. These little wonders are seeing the world for the first time. Most queen bumblebees nest underground in winter in a borrowed hole. It’s in that dark underground place where they lay and tend the new life that is to emerge in Spring. When the brood hatches they collect pollen and nectar to bring back to hive.

With this being Easter weekend the symbolism isn’t lost on me. Jesus also borrowed a hole in the ground where he brought forth new life. I’ve often contemplated that the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter morning had to be the darkest day in history. To the natural world there had been a darkness that fell across the land and an earthquake that destroyed the temple. The believers had seen the Messiah slain and sealed in a tomb. But much like the new light of Spring and the new life emerging from the ground Christ arose and with him a new world for mankind. Not a word ran by the law of man but by the Grace of God and merciful judgment. And just like the new brood of bumblebees we are new eyes exploring a new world.

Happy Easter friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Emerging Life In Spring 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Emerging Life 33021” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Even as the cold wind stirs and fills the skies with snowflakes new life continues to grow in my forest. The green leaves have heard the call of the sun’s golden voice and they refuse to be put back to sleep. The time of doing has come and the job of the trees is catch the new light. April showers will be here soon and the light empowers the forest to soak up the water and cast it back to the sky through their leaves. So the leaves must open in their season. Even with the tiniest of green returning to my world I somehow feel renewed myself. It’s time to shake off the stale air of the indoors and smell the fresh earth after the rain. And to look with childlike wonderment at the small things as they go about unencumbered by the desires of mankind. The green buds and the full leaves that follow are one of my favorite markers on my natural calendar. Soon I should start seeing the minnows in my creek and the return of the Heron that silently strolls through its shoals. The heart awakens with the mountains!

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The False Turkey Tail Fungus

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “False Turkey Tail Fungus 31721a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Dew drops rest aloft on the tips of the new grass like tiny streetlights for the hidden world beneath our feet. Below the crest of the this miniature jungle lays a population that’s ever present but seldom noticed. In my opinion the living soil is a machine far more complex than the minds of mankind are able to fully understand. Even with all our advanced technology we are just now recognizing the role of the fungi that are at the heart of our ability to thrive in this world. In Forage Friday #98 we looked at the Turkey Tail Fungus and all the benefits that this one mushroom offers and I mentioned that it has a look-alike in the False Turkey Tail Fungus. To the best of my knowledge this one has no food or medicinal values but it’s every bit as important to our survival as “Earthlings ” as it’s medicinal cousins.

Image Titled “False Turkey Tail Fungus 31721b”.

To the right of the page is the upper view of the False Turkey Tail Fungus. It has a really similar pattern of alternating bands. Typically it’s not found in grass or old leaves but on the sides of dead and dying trees or just the limbs. I can only guess that something knocked it down along with the twig in the Featured Image. The texture is more like dry leather or even thin bark than the Turkey Tail Fungus. It breaks down the wood into rich soil just like the other but if you flip it over you see that it’s not a polypore like Turkey Tail Fungus.

“False Turkey Tail Fungus 31721c showing gills.

The underside of this one has gills instead of pores. And if you’re using a mobile device to view the article it might be hard to see but there are tiny insects living in the gills. I’m not sure what type but maybe it’s springtails. The point is that the Almighty has set this mushroom aside for the insects to use. The mushroom breaks down the wood, the insects break down the mushroom and other soil life breaks down the dross left behind by the bugs. And the soil is renewed for a new tree to grow in. The new tree helps clean the air and bring the rain that helps the Fungus spread and the cycle starts over. What a wonderful world we’ve been given!

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
