One The Edge Of Transformation

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “On The Edge Of Transformation 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The crisp morning air brings the scent of rain mingled with the earthy aroma of fallen leaves as I look at back of Kanawha Falls. I’ve learned that the little clump of trees that cling to the rocks below the overflow dam are a pretty accurate indicator of what the season of color will bring. They’re among the first to change color and the more leaves they have when they change, the better the colors will be in the surrounding area. Of course the rain and wavelength of light also play a huge role in the show but these tend to tell us what to expect.

The Appalachian Fall is as beautiful as the Spring. To me it seems like the setting sun leaves a little bit of itself on the leaves every day until they all finally drop. Tones of gold and amber blend together with shades of crimson to make the mountains into a living sunset. If you live in the right spots those colors will reflect into your open window and transform your room as well. And the smell of Fall is more than rain and leaves. The smoke from wood burning stoves and fireplaces drift through the hills and you can easily envision the owner of that harth sipping coffee by the firelight on an early morning. Perhaps as a moment of reflection before putting on those boots and heading out for a long scouting hike to prepare for hunting season. The aroma of Autumn is also the canning of beans and other garden favorites throughout the day and a steaming bowl of chili in the evening. It’s a great day to be alive and living in the mountains.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Touching The Wind In Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Quiet Moment 93021” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I turned the music off as the big blue truck eased to a halt along the country lane. The small cluster of Fall wildflowers had caught my eye and I liked the way the creek looked in the background. The breeze has changed its scent from the rich floral tones of Spring through Summer to the earthy aroma of Autumn. The change is subtle but it’s there. The evenings are cool and the mornings are crisp. The afternoon drifts by like leaves floating in the streams as the sleepy sun hangs his head a little lower each day. In the 21st century quiet time is a treasure more precious than gold. So the opportunity to step out and touch the wind as it passes should not be overlooked. 3 elements connect to all. The Light, the water and the wind. Touching the wind is in some ways traveling the world. The wind sweeps the prairies, climbs mountains, crosses oceans and changes the desert. It brings the chill of the North into the South and cools the sun’s former rages. And when the colors are at their peak its the wind that clears the canvas. Lastly, it’s sound of the wind that stills the voices of the outside world. So take a few moments and enjoy the breeze. Sit by a quiet stream or pond and center your life.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Little Trivia About Thistles

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Thistle Launch 91921bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The dry air and cooler days begins the countdown. Guarded by foreboding spines the launchpad opens to reveal an armada of airborn pioneers ready to seek out new territory for colonial conquest. For most gardeners and enthusiasts of native landscape the thistle is a dreaded invader. But is it really an invader? Well that depends.

When we think about thistle the image that most comes to mind is the Scottish thistle of legend. If you’ve never heard the story it recounts the invasion of Scotland by the Normans and its said that one of the invaders for whatever reason was barefoot and stepped on a thistle. When he cried out in pain it alerted the Scotts to the enemy’s position and the sneak attack was thwarted. Henceforth the thistle became the emblem of the Scottish and is even known in some circles as guardian thistle. How it got to America is something I’m not sure of. Most likely it was by accident. However, there’s the mystery of Cherokee blowgun darts that are traditionally fletched with thistle down. A little research shows that North America actually has native species of thistle. The thistle was collected before the seeds form but after the the flowers close. There was a curing process that included clamping the flowers shut so they would stay in compact bundle. When ready they were wrapped onto the darts and used for both hunting and war. What’s more is that native songbirds such as the goldfinches tend to prefer thistle seeds as food. ( store bought “thistle seeds are often not even thistle but an African plant called nyjer)

Being raised around cattle and hay fields means that all thistle is bad. The cattle won’t eat it and as it spreads it reduces hay production. However, native field thistle is often mistaken for Scottish thistle. I’ve not personally checked this yet but the USDA says that native thistle has white on the underside of the leaves and now that I know this I’ll be keeping an eye out for it in the future. I don’t raise cattle anymore but I do absolutely love my songbirds and so in the future I’ll be considering my little flock of songbirds when I do the weed control around my house. I don’t want anything to completely take over but if I can find a native species of thistle and make a spot for them that’s free food for my birds, bees and butterflies.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Magnolia Berries In Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Magnolia Berries 91721”. All photos found on my website are my original work unless otherwise specified and are available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As the first leaves scatter in the winds of change I step out to enjoy the cooler weather. My landscape still pops with the yellow and orange jewelweed and the asters are alive with native bees dressed in emerald green armor going about their daily tasks. The bright red clusters of the Magnolia berries catch my attention as I survey the forest. This is what keeps the little Towhee close by. The big beautiful flowers that brought me such joy in Spring have finally brought forth their second treasure. The Towhee has hit his motherload in Magnolia fruit. One by one they drop from the crimson cones and wait for the Towhee to carry them to new places in the forest. The squirrels also chatter excitedly in the deep green as they tuck away their fair share of the Magnolia berries until all that’s left is the darkened empty cone. The gigantic leaves will soon color the wind bright yellow as they sail to the forest floor and the Magnolia will sleep until it’s time to once more freshen the breeze with the sweet scent of Spring and grace the eyes with its large flowers.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Before The Changes

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Before The Changes 92221bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The sleepy morning sun peers over the mountains and looks down into the landscape to find the last few blooming thistles. Things are still growing and he pours out his energy into the “lifescape” before his gaze. Bumblebees wake and waste not one second in finding their needs as the changing world prepares to reach the mark. From this day forward the long shadows will return to lull the forest to sleep. Shortly the sunset will stain the land in red, yellow and orange the wash the pallet clean in preparation for the next work in Spring. If the work is done on time then it will be a season for dreaming and planning. A hypnotic season of stars and open skies above the empty framework of the sleeping forest awaits the world. We should savor every single moment and not waste the glory of Fall while we have it.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
