I was never really the kind of guy who could tell you the exact make and model of a car. I can’t give you all the specs of the engine or transmission. But what I can tell you is about the spirit of the road. Not the daily doldrum of commuting but the freedom of exploration. The ability to get away from the daily grind and take a route that you’ve never really experienced even though you may have passed through. The spirit of the road is the windows down and the music loud as you cruise along without a care in the world. When I was a kid we still had roadside parks with picnic shelters for those travelers who are ready for a break. There used to be wide spots on the berm of Route 60 going up Gauley Mountain that were not “official” overlooks but gave stunning views of the New River Gorge. The spirit of the road is a small diner at the intersection of two interstate highways that serves the best ever monster sized hotdogs and the small service station that still has an attendant who comes out to fill your tank and check your fluids. Finally, the spirit of the road is a shortcut that leads back home.

Mental Vacation

Feeling the warm sun on my face today was very welcome change indeed. I wasn’t really able to get out and explore due to my day job but I able to step outside for a few minutes and breath the fresh air while focusing on tonight’s feature image of Kanawha Falls. Mentally I place myself in a comfortable spot near the water and pull up a large piece of driftwood for a seat. The breeze coming off of the falls is charged with oxygen and the sounds of the river pushes away all of mental clutter. Looking deeper into the scene brings me to the base of the falls where I can feel the spray. The large fish drift by beneath me going no place in particular. Time loses all meaning, as the moment encompasses eternity. To the outside world it’s just a few minutes but to me touching that moment was just enough to leave me refreshed. The buzzing of my smartphone summons my to return from my instant vacation but as the season continues to change there will more opportunities for more pictures to fuel my imagination. For now I’ll close my app and return to mundane world of an office chair while carrying the sunshine inside in the form of the a photo.

How We Made Post Updates Back In Day

Ecclesiastes 1:9 teaches us that “there is no new thing under the sun.” One might think that a status update via public post is a new idea but that’s not quite true. There was a time when you could find out what was going on in town by reading it on a public post. It wasn’t always an actual wooden fence post like the one in the feature image but there was “status updates” and even fake news. ( Trust me, I called 867-5309 and they have no idea who Jenny is! 😉) Even in old days we had trolling. Often the inflammatory remarks were scrawled on side of a bus stop or in a phone booth. (Similar to T.A.R.D.I.S. from Dr.Who only the same size inside and out.) The toughest part was changing your status. That would require a can of spray paint or sandpaper and in the most extreme cases an angle grinder might be needed. It wasn’t really uncommon to walk into a school gym locker room and see the coach supervising a young man as he scrubbed away at the inside of a locker. Several years ago I acquired an antique school principal’s desk. It was in decent shape and I still own it today but when I pulled out the drawers to clean it up I found a treasure trove of “statuses” under some of the drawers. ( a few that aren’t appropriate for public display). It seems that we are hardwired to leave our marks behind. At first I thought that I should clean up graffiti from under the desk drawers but then I thought about the discovery I was robbing from some future archaeologist as they try to decipher the codes. I also have an interest in petroglyphs. Those mysterious drawings carved into stone from the forgotten past. The real anthropologists say that all of them are “shamanic visions” and “hunting magic” but I have to wonder. If we could really read them fluently how many petroglyphs would read like a Facebook feed? Is that cave painting really just “caveman Bob” letting us know that the wife made the most awesome woolly mammoth BBQ last night? Remember that there’s no new thing under the sun.

Looking Down To Fayette Station & A Little Boy’s Dreams Of Flight

Tonight’s post contains extra information for Facebook users who are being blocked from using the links on my blog.

The New River Gorge is one of the most beautiful places in West Virginia. Normally photos taken of this area feature the New River Gorge Bridge spanning the gorge 876 feet above the water. However, once per year the bridge is open to pedestrians and there’s a chance to get the opposite angle featuring Fayette Station. The view of the canyon is as good as it gets without a helicopter. I remember back in late 70s and early 80s there was a hang glider craze and at least one time I saw gliders on the canyon rim. I have no idea if it was a good idea due to wind but it sounded like fun. The big concern would have been winds blowing the glider into a rock. I’ve stood up on a ledge along the canyon walls and experienced the rain coming up from valley below due to those winds.

Walking the bridge and the high cliff overhangs of West Virginia always inspired the sensation of flying for me. As a child with a very active imagination I always pretended that I could build a giant paper airplane and sail it from the edge of canyon. In my little fantasy I would bank by leaning one way or the other and sail all the way to Gauley Bridge. It’s a fantasy brought back to me by standing on the edge of the New River Gorge Bridge and looking down at Fayette Station.
