Just Beyond The Horizon. Ponderings of Summer

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Homeward 50821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck coasts to halt on the edge of the Summersville Dam. In spite of the cool evening I have the window down just enough to enjoy a little fresh air. I’ve been in the shelter of my mountain for a while and even though it brings me great joy to live among the trees and birds I do miss the open sky and all the glory of the setting sun. As I haphazardly park the truck in the empty lot of the scenic overlook my attention is drawn to the curve of the dam. It’s in this spot that the evening drive into the west seems to merge with the sky and end in some mythical place where anything is possible. In my memories it’s the land of eternal summer. I close my eyes and I can see brightly colored tents in the campground and the evening fires are beginning to flicker. The boats are are lined up along the shore of the campground and the smell of coffee brewed in an old fashioned percolator mingles with the aroma of roasted marshmallows. The children who have spent all day swimming in the lake are telling tales about the giant catfish on the bottom and dare the unbelievers to just stick their toes in the water if they doubt his existence. The challenge is usually met with excuses of not being able to see snakes on the water’s edge. The older kids are sitting around their own fires and listening to the soft rock of the 80s and trying to work up the nerve to speak to that special person of interest. If only summer never ended! Eventually the fires become embers and the music on the radio is replaced by the crickets and frogs providing the background while whip-poor-wills give the melodies. And in the late hours while counting the stars over the water two hands join in an unspoken conversation. This is the mythical land of eternal summer and anything is possible.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Remastering Glory Days

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is remastered from 2018 and titled “September Crossing 91518RM” all the photos found on my website are my original work and are available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Within the past few days I’ve overheard more than one person refer to the “Glory Days” with nostalgia. The intention of course was a longing for the days of youth when life was simple and responsibilities were few. God never intended for life to drudgery and constant tasks. Adam’s job was fairly simple. To oversee a self-sustaining garden and give everything a name. In fact if you read carefully the Garden of Eden was Adam’s charge. There he answered only to God meaning that he authority over the Angels that were within his charge. But that’s a deeper thought for another day. The point here is that his responsibility wasn’t a burden. He was in his “Glory Days”. Of course we know how that ended. He was drawn to the only place in the garden where the authority wasn’t his and he fell from grace through an act of disobedience. He lost his charge and from that day on he was burdened. I couldn’t find the verification on the origin of the phrase “Gory Days” but I always thought it was the days before the fall of mankind. But the words have a slightly different meaning today. We think of it as simply meaning “when things were better”, specifically in the past. The scenarios are different but the basics are usually the same. The athletes long for the days when they mastered the field. Some long to regain the beauty that they once held and even the scholar misses being the head of the class. But is it true that all Glory Days are in the past?

If that’s true then we struggle with the maintenance of yesterday at the expense of tomorrow. According to Newton the whole universe is in a constant state of decline and the best we can hope for is to lose glory as slowly as possible and even then we will eventually fail. According to this conventional wisdom it’s a lost cause. But what if conventional wisdom is wrong. What if your potential for future success was limited only by your perspectives? To return to the biblical analogy for a moment we are promised that the end is better than the beginning and what we see in this world is only a transition and the higher glory is in the future.

John Glenn certainly felt like his first trip into space was a lifetime achievement and that was his glory days but at age 77 he returned to space in a more sophisticated ship. If his focus was only on the past then he might have turned down the opportunity and never had his higher glory. Instead of sitting in a chair somewhere recalling the time when he was great he worked and trained to go beyond his first achievement. All it really takes is to recognize that the finish line hasn’t been crossed yet and move forward. We can remaster our lives in the same way I remastered the Featured Image. By taking advantage of new opportunities ( like new and more sophisticated software) and learning to let go of the past.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Pinnacle Of Silence

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pinnacle In Silence 20921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Only the wind sings as I approach the crystallized lake. The song tells a story of the stones touched by icy gales as winter’s breat rushes through empty boughs. The deep cold sweeps through the land binding rivers and cracking apart mountains. And yet the world needs the deep cold. Laying dormant beneath the forest litter the seed banks are woken by the throw of the frost. Some need the water they’ve soaked in to swell and open their hard shells so they might germinate when the weather breaks and the April showers soften their beds. Tiny roots stretch forth and seek the richness endowed by limbs cast down seasons ago. The deep cold is really a reset of cycle. The cracks formed by the freezing of the stone create aquifers and catch the living soil that would otherwise wash away and be lost. And as the ice glistens in the new light stoke the fire and have faith. Enjoy the silence and catch a breath. Each day the sun pushes away the shadows a little earlier and soon the ice will fade with them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Breath Of February 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Breath Of February” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

In absolute silence the frozen lake stretches out through the painted sandstone walls. Some of markings tell the stories of local teenagers who speak in tones of acrylic and aerosols. The other markings are God’s work. The latter being made of different minerals that are part of the stone. Subtle shapes that resemble petroglyphs and tell the dreamer the most fantastic tales in a language known only to the imagination. The thin glazing of ice also speaks of the sleeping world beneath the thin pane of frozen crystal. Half buried in the soft bottom sleeps a leviathan of a catfish which dreams of the chase and another miraculous escaped from the hook. He lives to be seen by those would be catchers and then to fade away into legendary stories told around campfires. The ravens glide slowly over the frozen mud ever watchful for the odd scrap of food left behind by some visitors to the ice. Their dark eyes miss nothing among the rocks. Not even the photographer who stands on the frozen mud and dreams of joining their patrol just so he can see what lays beyond the bridge in the distance.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Early Signs Of Changes Late Winter 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Still Waters 20921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old Man Winter casts a blast of his icy wrath into my mountains. As I stood on the end of the winter boat launch I could feel the chill creeping into my body in the absolute stillness of the frozen lake. Small stones litter the ice as even the very stones succumb to frosty teeth that bites at them. The ducks don’t seem to notice as they paddle about in the outlet of the creek.

Image Titled “Winter Dancers 20921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

They continue on in full expectation of returning sun with all it’s golden glory. Nearby the the chickweed is beginning to bud and in a few days will herald the March winds with tiny flowers that last into April. The rains will come and fill the lake until the muddy, rocky wasteland disappears for another season. This life is temporary and everything in it changes with its appointed time. Cold days will fade and ice will melt. The sun will drive Old Man Winter back to his kingdom in the North. In just a little over 7 weeks well have the official start of solar Spring but already the wild roses are telling us to get ready for a beautiful awakening. As I was out and about today I noticed the blood red buds of a wild roses and even a few early leaves.

The first new leaves of 2021.

Now for the sake of honesty the wild roses will do this several times before they awaken fully but it’s an early sign that the angel of the sun has reached a certain mark and climatic winter (by the old signs) will soon come to a close. It’s true that we’ll have a few more frozen days and a couple of more snowfalls first. But it’s closer than it was yesterday.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
