Solitude And Focus

There are times when a person just needs a little solitude. When the world around you is full of flashing signs and blaring music and distractions of every kind. We all have those moments when the mental clutter just needs to be pushed back and space needs to be given for focusing on one thing at a time. We need to just let our minds drift for a little while like a bird on the lake. He’s not trapped in the water. He can leave at time of his choosing. He can paddle around and go to any part of the water or land that he wants. He’s not overtaken by winds or currents but instead he rides them. He works in harmony with creation and achieves what is needed. And he rests when it’s time. He is at peace with his environment as God intended. Solitude isn’t really about being antisocial or introverted. It’s about focus. It’s intended to be a limited time for mental and emotional recharge. We exercise our bodies to grow stronger and have more endurance but any successful athletes will tell you that it’s during the resting cycle that the strength manifests. Our minds and spirits are the same way. We need a resting state to fully benefit from the stimulation we experience in daily life.

Childhood Memories Of A Winter Morning

The hoary frost clings to the bare branches and the world starts to look like white velvet. The cool weather brings the smell of wood smoke to the valley. I can really relate to the philosophy of the bears as old man winter approaches. The urge to pull the thick quilted blankets over my head and not come out until Easter is very tempting. But then there’s the traditional cold weather hardy breakfasts that draws us back to humanity. Some of my favorite winter memories include waking up to the smell of warm maple syrup and the sounds of bacon in a hot skillet. Today we can call up any entertainment we want to with the aid of technology but in my earliest memories there was only three channels and cartoons were only available on weekends. After breakfast we would pile up on the couch with that heavy quilt and favorite pillow and spend the whole day watching T.V. Even without the T.V. I enjoyed just curling up in my blanket and watching the fire burn.

As the dark days of winter grow shorter over the next month it’s a good time to recharge your biological batteries. The light will be returning soon and soon afterwards there will be a world reborn to explore.

Living In The Details

As my big blue truck coasts to a halt in the wide spot near the tracks I grab my gear. The misty drops of rain falling on the windshield are growing thicker and I know that I don’t have much time to catch tonight’s feature image. I tuck the camera into the repurposed igloo lunch bucket and begin to walk back up the berm to a spot with easier access. As I was taking shots from different angles and searching for the ones that will make the cut the warm color of the fallen leaves in contrast to the cold steel ribbons really stood out for me. It’s those little details in life that we cherish. We all have a lifetime of experiences but why do we only remember some of them? The answer is in those warm little details. The smell of grandma’s kitchen, the colorful bulletin board in the elementary school hallway and your favorite childhood toy are things that you never forget. Those memories will always stand out for you against the background of daily experiences like the colorful leaves between the lines.

A Hunting Story

Slowly I walk the old mining road being careful not to kick a stone or snap a random twig under my heavy boot. I’m swallowed up by the cool mists that hang onto the abandoned strip mine. I know that he’s out here somewhere. The moist air carries a musky scent but I can’t really tell where it’s coming from. I know that his instincts are to stay in the low gaps between the rolling hills. He’ll be just inside the threshold of the forest edge at the far end of the field. The rustling of leaves somewhere to my left catches my attention and I freeze in my tracks. If I stand still enough he’ll t think that I’m just another bush on the ridge line. I dare not turn my head. He’s nearsighted but even the slightest movement will give me away. I can hear my heart pounding with excitement and my hands are beginning to tremble a little. I have to calm down. His finely tuned ears can hear my heartbeat even at this range. His ears rotate back and forth like the sweep of a radar tower. He’s trying to triangulate my position. I knows I’m too close for comfort. I strain my peripheral vision to catch a glimpse as he sniffs the air. He knows that he’s not alone. The firm thump of a hoof breaks the silence. Through the fog we’re just an odd shadow to each other. He lowers his head and stomps the ground one more time. It’s just a bluff but I slowly slide my finger across the safety switch on my rifle. That was my mistake. The metallic click was all that was needed to confirm his suspension and in a single bound he vanishes into bush. I wade through waist deep broom sedge trying to pick up his trail but it’s a fruitless effort. He’s outsmarted me again and I’ll return to camp with only the story of the one who got away.

Where Past Meets Future

The cold November wind cuts through the open field like a wolf chasing after it’s prey. I stand in the middle of the old highway looking at the old derelict barn and continue to allow my imagination to have it’s way with the scene in front of me. I listen to the echoes of time as they speak about what might have been and what may be again one day. Last night I wrote about a possible past surrounding the old barn on Muddelty Creek. As my mind wonders into the future I can envision a young couple who exits a vehicle and joins hands as they step up to the footprint of where the old barn used to stand. They are just starting a life together. Her vision for the property is so vivid that as she stands in the spot where the living room will be that she knows the exact color of the walls. She describes in detail all her plans. His hands are skilled and experienced. He will bring her vision to life. The old barn that she fell in love with as a child will rise again as a rustic home in the country. There they will raise a family and fill the special place with and art.
