The Treasures Of The Mountain

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Appalachian Treasures 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The breeze carries that familiar sweet earthy scent of freshly fallen leaves throughout the hills and valleys. If I am still enough I can hear the leaves gently tumbling through the branches before softly coming to rest on the ground. Small birds of every feather all around collecting their favorite seed and hunting insects. The sun sweeps across the the landscape caressing fully changed leaves to reveal the secret treasure of the mountains. Golden leaves shine brilliantly and behind them the rich red forms a velvety blanket. Could a royal treasury hold another spender more wonderous than the glory of nature in her seasons? Do kings not trade their treasures for landscape that contains such glorious moments as is found in our mountains? Step outside your door and smell the breeze, accept the sun’s touch and let your eyes fall on the treasures that surround you and enjoy your life in the time you’re given.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Forage Friday #80 Pawpaw

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pawpaw Leaves In Fall 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice.

“Pickin up pawpaws, put’em in your pocket.

Way down yonder in the pawpaw patch”

Every time I eat a pawpaw I hear my papa singing the old children’s song to us boys. I was fairly young but I remember sitting at the vintage art deco table eating his favorite breakfast of light bread and milk. During the Great Depression utilizing stale bread as breakfast cereal would have been a way to stretch out a precious commodity. And during the short season when they were available the pawpaws were a treat and probably eaten at multiple meals. In the Appalachian Mountains and throughout the South pawpaw trees were a popular part of the homestead. It’s an amazing fruit that has a custard like texture and tastes like a blend of Mango, Peach and Banana. And it may have come to West Virginia by way of Mammoth. The fruit is full of huge Chestnut brown seeds that have a thick leathery skin that would have allowed them to survive digestion. In fact In order to propagate a pawpaw from seed they have to frozen for about four months and then the coating knicked so the sprout can grow during germination. Scientists believe that as the mammoth migrated North the pawpaw hitched a ride in their bellies and eventually adapted to the climate of the mountains. They seem to be another edge species that thrives in partial shade and near water. And the biggest reason why we don’t see them in markets is because they have an extremely short shelf life. It’s only recently that some people are experimenting with them as a frozen product because the technology has advanced enough that they can be processed in the field. I have discovered that like bananas they tend to become sweeter as they age and I presume that is due to the breakdown of starch. I knew one person years ago that wouldn’t eat them until the ants became interested in them and then they were sweet enough for him to enjoy.

The entry in Petersen’s Field Guide To Wild Medicinal Plants says that Native Americans would grind the large seeds into a powder which was used to treat lice. As a defense against moths pawpaw trees produce chemicals that are toxic to insects. These chemicals known as Acetoginis are found in the leaves, inner bark and seeds of the pawpaw. In fact the only insect that I’m aware of that eats pawpaw leaves is the larvae of the Zebra Swallowtail.

The inner bark of a pawpaw is said to be good for making ropes and baskets.

Well, that’s it for tonight friends. Good night and be blessed throughout your days.

The Winds Of Change

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Fire On The Mountain 102020a and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Subtlety the cool breeze washes through my Appalachian Mountains. In my mind’s eyes I see the wind pass through the sunset picking up the colors and depositing them across forest. The sugar maples are given the the golden tones along with the beech and hickory. Red maples are blessed with a crimson as is the sourwood and red oaks. The white oaks are bestowed the pigment of flames and they’re clothed in both reds and orange. Relatively small and scrubby sumac takes the velvety blood red and silky dogwoods are painted dark purple. Immortal conifers retain the lush green and the holly is dotted with red berries.

The Appalachian Fall is like living in the prism as the forest explodes in chromatic glory! All around me a new color reveals itself and some in multiple tones. It’s the last party before nature sleeps and renews herself. An we should enjoy the celebration with her.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Enjoying The Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “New England Asters 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

My big blue truck carries me down the quiet country lane. The October day is mild. Not too warm but warm enough to enjoy the fresh air that flows through the open window. The ditches on either side of the road are lined with the most beautiful little purple flowers. I tend to subconsciously think of Spring as the season of flowers as the mountain wakes from it’s long winter nap and while it looks like there’s more variety in the types of flowers in Spring Fall certainly has an abundance of Asters. Even better is the way that the purple and blue are offset by the red, yellow and orange of the changing leaves. Right now our mountains look as though a rainbow collapsed across the landscape and stained the forest. Sometimes I’m asked about what my favorite season is and I have to think about it. Each has it’s own special something that touches my soul. When it comes right down to it I guess that I’d have to say that my favorite season is “Today”. Life is the moment that we have and it’s ever changing. The colors of Fall will only last a few short days before the wind and rain washes over God’s canvas and clears it for the next work. So don’t spend that ever fleeting second on things that don’t enhance your life in some way. Instead, set aside a little time to shut down the electronic world and breathe in the real world outside your door. The wind, sun and rain speak to you just as loud if you listen and their words are peaceful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Tiny Wings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pearl Crescent Butterfly 92520a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

“Timy life is important life” I thought to myself as a slowly crept up on the little orange butterfly. The tiny wings were only about the size of a US quarter but intricately ornate. The cool shadows of Panther Mountain kept the little beauty busy slowly pumping it’s wings to circulate warmth as it fed. It didn’t really seem to mind the giant hovering above it edging his lens ever closer. The tiny butterfly is one of main pollinators of the asters which seem to thrive on my mountain well into December and sometimes into Spring. I look at how detailed the wings are and my science side marvels at how much those patterns help him hide from predators and my spiritual side thinks about how much care God put into designing his color scheme. Insects use more of the spectrum than we do. Their world is one of reflections and shadows and the highlights of the wings make the Crescent Butterfly resemble a flower pedal to the hungry onlookers. The little butterfly finally decides that his camouflage doesn’t fool me and deftly angles it’s wings and is lifted into the air now resembling a fallen leaf.

If God put so much effort into the tiny life in my lens how much more did he care for mankind?

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
