The Eastern Rat Snake, A Barn Companion

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Eastern Rat Snake 52620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Like most boys I was always fascinated by snakes as a kid. Scientifically of course. But I was also taught to never get close to them. I suppose that my parents feared that I would become too comfortable with the harmless varieties and accidentally get too close to the dangerous ones and get the “hurt juice”. So thus began my young adventures into the library. The internet was just science fiction and the most powerful computer one planet earth was the size of a building and belonged to NASA. So the next best thing was Encyclopedia Britannica in the School system. If you’re lucky they have a version that was updated in the 1850s and contained the sum knowledge of mankind. The encyclopedia had a lot of information. There’s even pictures of a snakes skeleton and a chart that points to different snake body parts.

The forked tongue seen in tonight’s feature image is what gives them their ability to track. It tells them what direction the smell is coming from.

Here in North America we only have a handful of venomous snakes to worry about and even less in West Virginia since we’re to far outside of the Coral Snake’s range. ( The coral snake is actually a member of the cobra family. ) here we only worry about the Pit Vipers. The Rattlesnakes and Copperhead. There’s unconfirmed reports of the Cottonmouth here but officially they’re not found here either. All of the put vipers have slit shaped pupils like a cat. In the previous image you can see that the rat snakes have round pupils. You can also see that he has a nostril but no heat sensitive pit.

As for snakes that were not in a book or on T.V. they were not quite as fascinating. In fact until I was about 16 years old they terrified me. It was a conditioned reflex. A behavior that I wasn’t really born with. Learning to overcome that involved me taking every opportunity to not just expose myself to the live snakes but to actually get to know them. As it turns out, the Eastern Rat Snake is pretty docile under most circumstances. This one in particular is downright friendly. He even has a name. I call him “De-Con”. That’s right. Same as the pest control product. And for the same reason. This one is a resident on my property. His job is to hang out in and around my sheds and eat as many mice as he wants. We have actually formed a loose relationship. I was able to get tonight’s photos because De-Con allowed me to stretch out in the grass with him and invade his personal space with the camera. I do occasionally have to remove him from the lawn tractor before I start it because he likes to curl up on the mowing deck. I have not tried to pick him up with my hand. He has no venom and isn’t aggressive but there’s a bit of a trick to picking up a snake without causing it pain or throwing it into panic. De-Con is a wild animal with a primitive mind that only understands that if something picks you up its probably trying to eat you. So instead I have a stick with a crude hook that I move him with. It really doesn’t take much and he’s learned that when I start messing with the mower it’s time to slip under the shed until the ground stops shaking. Today though I caught him just out sunning himself in the grass. It looks like he’s just finished shedding his skin because he’s so shiny and iridescent.

Finally, De-Con decided that he’d given the photographer plenty of poses and calmly made his way into the tall weeds on the edge of the forest. I was fairly satisfied with the encounter since it’s not every day that we actually see each other. In spite of the fact that he’s living in my sheds I only see him a few times a year. It’s in his nature to avoid contact with any human.

A Day With The Goslings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Family Swim 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

One season blends into the next. Late Spring and early Summer are days of campfires on the lake. Brightly colored tents line the shores and kayaks glide silently beneath the cliffs. The world welcomes new life nestled in the cool grass.

Image Titled “Baby Goslings In Cool Grass.

Slowly the shadows slip back into ether that spawned them as the morning sun extends his kingdom on the lake. The little goslings begin to stir as the new light wakes their hunger.

Image Titled “Feeding Gosling 52620a”

The clover is sweet and the tender new shoots of grass are just what a growing baby needs to grow strong.

Image “Titled Feeding Gosling 52620b”

It takes a lot of food to power the little one’s day.

Image Titled “Stay Together 52620”

Once breakfast is finally finished it’s time for goslings to have their lessons. Today Mother Goose focuses on simply staying together.

Image Titled “Emerald Water And Goslings 52620”

It takes a little practice. So the babies paddle around a bit practicing the turns and maintaining a formation.

And when they’re ready mom and dad take the lead and guide them throughout the realm.

A Stop By The Marsh

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Red-Winged Blackbird 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The Cattail sways gently in the wind but the Red-Winged Blackbird pays no attention. He simply lands on it with the same degree of deft he uses on the most stable of Alders. The wind is his element of mastery anyway. He rocks with the shaking while calling for his mate who occasionally pops up from reeds had does a loop the loop to show him that she’s okay. In some of the stronger gusts he bolts into the air and determined powerful thrusts of his wings he suspends himself between Heaven and Earth. As the gust dies he descends with it and adheres to the cattail as if drawn to it by some powerful magnetic field. The game goes on for several minutes until she finishes whatever it is that she’s doing in the hidden part of the marsh. Then she exploads out of the reeds and circles him before darting to a new section of wetland where the game starts over again.

The Courtship Dance Of The Crescent Butterflies

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Tag Along 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The cool scent of water mint rises from the creek while I ease my way closer to butterflies. Their tiny little wings flex in unison as they pump the warmth of the sun throughout their bodies. They take short hops from leaf to leaf in perfect synchronicity as if they were physically connected. I have often compared a butterfly’s flight to a dance joy or raw wild freedom but today they dance to a different tune. Today, it’s a slow dance. The song is one that plays in their hearts as they lift off together. They turn in a slow arch and dip. Once more they land in perfect alignment and pause only long enough for three slow wingbeats. They rise once again and this time the dance takes the form of a figure 8 before returning to the same spot. The male has not wavered in his devotion. He’s matched her lead in every choreographed maneuver through the air. They continue to pump their wings in perfect synchronicity and then they lift off together. This time though the dance has ended and the lovers make their exit to enjoy each other’s company in private.

A Beckoning

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled ” Philadelphia Fleabane 52620a”

The soft breeze stirs up the scent of pollen hanging in the humid air. The the little fleabane flowers sway and dance as if they can hear the angels sing in unison. All of glory responds to the summons with a voice unheard by human ears but felt on the soul. A beckoning if you will. Still the mind and open up the door for the king of glory desires your company today. The dust of yesterday in the corners are of no consequences. He only wishes to share breath today, And every day after.
