No Agenda On Three Rivers

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “No Agenda On Three Rivers” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article

The afternoon sun fills the three rivers area as the water rolls lazily by. I had stopped at one of my favorite places to enjoy the last few rays of the sun and watch to see if the local eagle makes an appearance. So far I’ve not had a second chance to get a photo of it. The water birds still here though. As I look out towards the trestle bridge I hear the familiar sound of train coming up the track on the opposite side of the river. Small flycatchers skim the river picking off insects and performing acrobatic maneuvers that fighter jets can only dream of. In spite of the sun a damp breeze foretells of the coming rain. It’s a “No Agenda” kind of evening so I enjoy the sun while it lasts. I listen to the birds and eventually the mourning dove confirms my forecasts. Just beyond the mountains northwest of me the clouds are moving in and the light slowly dims and tells me that it’s time to climb back up into the big blue truck and head home.

A Special Sunrise Over Long Point

The big blue truck slows to halt in the small parking lot. It’s still dark but the August morning air is already warm. The crickets are no longer chirping but the occasional cicada drones out in the ebbing darkness. After a few sips of coffee I set the break and begin unloading my gear. I was really on my way to photograph the one opportunity in my life for a solar eclipse but I had left with plenty of time for a few side trips. The sunrise over Long Point was shaping up to be a special one. I had all three cameras in place when the first rays of morning broke over the ridge. First was the reds and golds. As the light show progressed the colors shifted to pink and pale turquoise before becoming the deep blue that’s so familiar. I had read that at the time of an eclipse the light does unusual things but I didn’t expect a tropical sunrise. I took several pictures but this one from the T5 was the most unique. I had to be disciplined with my SD card because the main show was still several hours away. After packing up my gear back into the truck I sat in the cab and enjoyed a few more sips of coffee and continued to watch the sky change color as the sun made its appearance. Soon the colors settle into a normal sky and it’s time to head to the next stop. One more sip of my coffee and I pull back onto the highway.

A Short Pause For Family

Today I have spent the entire day with my extended family celebrating our traditional Christmas. Because the evening’s events went a little longer than expected (which is a good thing) my post is actually going to come after midnight. We’ll pickup with the meaning behind Christmas decorations on Sunday Evening (December 23rd ). Tomorrow night we’ll be looking into the star on top of the tree. I hope everyone has had as much of a blessed day as I have.

Childhood Memories Of A Winter Morning

The hoary frost clings to the bare branches and the world starts to look like white velvet. The cool weather brings the smell of wood smoke to the valley. I can really relate to the philosophy of the bears as old man winter approaches. The urge to pull the thick quilted blankets over my head and not come out until Easter is very tempting. But then there’s the traditional cold weather hardy breakfasts that draws us back to humanity. Some of my favorite winter memories include waking up to the smell of warm maple syrup and the sounds of bacon in a hot skillet. Today we can call up any entertainment we want to with the aid of technology but in my earliest memories there was only three channels and cartoons were only available on weekends. After breakfast we would pile up on the couch with that heavy quilt and favorite pillow and spend the whole day watching T.V. Even without the T.V. I enjoyed just curling up in my blanket and watching the fire burn.

As the dark days of winter grow shorter over the next month it’s a good time to recharge your biological batteries. The light will be returning soon and soon afterwards there will be a world reborn to explore.

Living In The Details

As my big blue truck coasts to a halt in the wide spot near the tracks I grab my gear. The misty drops of rain falling on the windshield are growing thicker and I know that I don’t have much time to catch tonight’s feature image. I tuck the camera into the repurposed igloo lunch bucket and begin to walk back up the berm to a spot with easier access. As I was taking shots from different angles and searching for the ones that will make the cut the warm color of the fallen leaves in contrast to the cold steel ribbons really stood out for me. It’s those little details in life that we cherish. We all have a lifetime of experiences but why do we only remember some of them? The answer is in those warm little details. The smell of grandma’s kitchen, the colorful bulletin board in the elementary school hallway and your favorite childhood toy are things that you never forget. Those memories will always stand out for you against the background of daily experiences like the colorful leaves between the lines.
