Holiday Gatherings

As the evening light lingers all of the ribbons are cast aside and the brightly colored paper is scattered across the floor. The gifts well received and the children are either asleep or fighting to hold their heavy eyes open and enjoy the New toys for “just five more minutes.” In most homes the feasting will continue for several days ending on January 1st.

Extended families will begin the egress back to the individual houses with those familiar connections renewed. The bonding of of their hearts made stronger with the time spent together under the twinkling lights and around the tables of home.

The love they have shared under the glow of the New Light will warm their souls in the cold months to come.

I do often think about what it must have meant to part ways again in the days before long distance communication. In a time when one cold only share their thoughts with pen and paper in hopes that an express rider would be able to deliver the message intact. In those days a person may not see a loved one’s face for decades. Those were the days when expressions of love was delivered on the back of a horse and a visit from a friend or relative was a journey through the wilderness.

But that was also an age when a person’s time was their own. Unless they were tied down with livestock ( and many were ) there was no artificial deadline to be home by. That trip over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house was one that could be experienced and not just taken. and once the destination had been reached staying for an extra day or two was part of the gift.

Snow Day!

Color Photography

The second polar blast of deep winter is just a few days away. It’s normal for us get a couple of these from late January to mid February and not uncommon for early March. As a kid I would always be excited to hear about a winter storm warning on the news because that meant the possibility of a snow day. Now, for some of my readers who live in warmer climates I understand that you may not fully appreciate the art of the the snow day. Have no fear, I will guide you through it. 😉

First, as soon as the morning alarm goes off you need to jump out of bed and run to the window. Do you see snow? If it’s snowing heavily then that’s a good sign but it’s not a snow day yet. Next run into the living room and turn on the news. In the old days the weatherman/girl would read the list of closed schools but today the list just scrolls across the screen or you get a notification on your app that school has been called off. Once you’ve confirmed that your school is on the list you’ll need to have a talk with mom and dad. Be mature, if they suspect that shenanigans are afoot you’re going to wind up with a babysitter. If you have access to a little brother or sister now’s the time to help them with breakfast. It’s important that mom and dad see you as capable of taking are of things. Once mom and dad have left the house in your capable hands you should spend the rest of the morning under you’re favorite blanket watching cartoons with your dog and younger sibling. Cartoons in the old days usually lasted until mid morning. In my case that’s about the time that a grandparent would make an appearance. If it was my Grandfather then there’s a chance that sleds will be hooked up to the tractor and the shenanigans are about to begin. More than likely he’s been out all morning preparing the sled run by packing the snow with the tractor tires or creating a path to pull us all over the farm. By lunchtime the ride is over and everyone goes inside for hot Cocoa and a toasted peanut butter sandwich. The rest of the day is spent alternating between sledding and cocoa until it’s time for mom and dad to come home again. Missing a day or two of school due to snow didn’t really make a difference in my education however an extra day with my Grandfather is an experience that enriched my whole life.

Homebound

Color Photography

The road home can be a steep climb. Sometimes there’s unexpected twists and turns. Some days the journey is through wind and rain or ice and snow. Some days are full of warm sunshine and the trees are full of singing birds. The journey home can be long. Blessed is the one who is joined by companions who encourage you to continue on. Even if they can’t travel along beside you every day. The warm smile in greeting and the voice that speaks gentle words of encouragement was a greater gift than you ever knew. It shouldn’t come as a shock that you made it home first. You should know that those encouraging words will echo in my memory until the day that I also approach that gate that marks the end of the journey. I won’t be surprised to see your smile or listen to the excitement in your voice as the gate opens up to welcome us home.

A Short Pause For Family

Today I have spent the entire day with my extended family celebrating our traditional Christmas. Because the evening’s events went a little longer than expected (which is a good thing) my post is actually going to come after midnight. We’ll pickup with the meaning behind Christmas decorations on Sunday Evening (December 23rd ). Tomorrow night we’ll be looking into the star on top of the tree. I hope everyone has had as much of a blessed day as I have.

True Treasures

The Bible says that Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I have been reminded today of what my true treasure on earth is. My true treasure is the love and friendship that has been poured into my life from all over the world. Truly I am a very blessed man indeed. If the Lord blesses me with another fifty years I still wouldn’t have enough time to show you how much I am truly touched by your love and friendship.
