Our Own Little Island

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Our Own Little Island 32321” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Sunshine dances on the gentle waters of the highland delta as the big blue truck ebbs its way up the single lane road. As I emerged from behind the reeds the familiar honking of the local geese greets my ears. As I look up the wings are spread out in the March breeze. I instinctively knew that the geese were warning me not to approach their island. The geese are beautiful but territorial and especially if they have a nest nearby. The little island is only a few square feet but it’s all their’s. I can relate to their desire to be left alone in their peaceful setting among the reeds. Home is sacred place where the world can’t make too many demands. I’m sure that for a goose it’s important to not be disturbed while you’re simply feeling the soft mud under your toes or having a quiet swim on sun-kissed waters. The need for peaceful quiet time is universal to all life on earth. As soon as they realized that the big blue truck was firmly intent on remaining dry they settled down and returned to the pleasant activity of just being wild and free on their own little island.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The First Butterfly Of 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunshine And Sweetness 91120” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The loving glow of the new light washes over my mountain breathing life into the surrounding forest. Today was one of those special Spring days when the birds didn’t just sing in the morning but kept their jubilation throughout the entire day. They didn’t really come to feeders much but they were close by. Occasionally I see movement out of the corner of my eye and glance up from my work to see which one of my forest friends had come to visit but saw nothing. Bright yellow flash made me think that maybe the Goldfinch had finally gotten their warm season colors but I was wrong. It turned out to be a Tiger Swallowtail. The first Butterfly of 2021! It’s one of signs that I’ve been looking for. Now most years we get a little cold snap around Easter and sometimes it even snows. But don’t worry about the Butterfly. It actually has its own antifreeze and it will simply sleep until the weather warms back up which is usually within a day or so. But the sighting is a very strong sign that the days of warm breezes and green leaves are not so far away. There’s a few blooms open for her to feed on but if you want to make life easier for the early butterflies set out some overripe fruit. Butterflies are particularly fond of rotting bananas and oranges but they’ll come to just about any of the fruit that’s past it’s use by date. I wasn’t fast enough to get a photo this time so I’m using one from my archives.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Reaching For The New Light

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reaching For The Light 31721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Deep beneath the layers of leaves and duff the tiny roots feel the calling of the sun. The warmth of the new light kindles a refreshing of life in the long dormant forests. The little mottled leaf pushes back the dark blanket of yesterday’s glory to greet the new life of today.  But isn’t that how all of life goes? What was yesterday’s glory must be shed eventually. Certainly we need to rest beneath our accomplishments for while to recover our strength but eventually we have to leave that place in order to grow again. And although what rises above the surface is wonderful and beautiful it’s not really the core of our being. Our true self is the roots that grow unseen deep beneath the surface. The parts above are really only there to engage with the light and feed our roots.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days!

The False Turkey Tail Fungus

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “False Turkey Tail Fungus 31721a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Dew drops rest aloft on the tips of the new grass like tiny streetlights for the hidden world beneath our feet. Below the crest of the this miniature jungle lays a population that’s ever present but seldom noticed. In my opinion the living soil is a machine far more complex than the minds of mankind are able to fully understand. Even with all our advanced technology we are just now recognizing the role of the fungi that are at the heart of our ability to thrive in this world. In Forage Friday #98 we looked at the Turkey Tail Fungus and all the benefits that this one mushroom offers and I mentioned that it has a look-alike in the False Turkey Tail Fungus. To the best of my knowledge this one has no food or medicinal values but it’s every bit as important to our survival as “Earthlings ” as it’s medicinal cousins.

Image Titled “False Turkey Tail Fungus 31721b”.

To the right of the page is the upper view of the False Turkey Tail Fungus. It has a really similar pattern of alternating bands. Typically it’s not found in grass or old leaves but on the sides of dead and dying trees or just the limbs. I can only guess that something knocked it down along with the twig in the Featured Image. The texture is more like dry leather or even thin bark than the Turkey Tail Fungus. It breaks down the wood into rich soil just like the other but if you flip it over you see that it’s not a polypore like Turkey Tail Fungus.

“False Turkey Tail Fungus 31721c showing gills.

The underside of this one has gills instead of pores. And if you’re using a mobile device to view the article it might be hard to see but there are tiny insects living in the gills. I’m not sure what type but maybe it’s springtails. The point is that the Almighty has set this mushroom aside for the insects to use. The mushroom breaks down the wood, the insects break down the mushroom and other soil life breaks down the dross left behind by the bugs. And the soil is renewed for a new tree to grow in. The new tree helps clean the air and bring the rain that helps the Fungus spread and the cycle starts over. What a wonderful world we’ve been given!

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Welcome Spring 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Buckeye Emergence 32021” and is available for purchase by clicking on the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The late afternoon air is cool and crisp as I step out towards my little sanctuary today. Yesterday I had published a photo of this very same tree only the photo was 48 hours old. Today, just in time for the first day of Spring the Buckeye finally opened. After about five months of seeing empty branches the opening of the Buckeye buds is as beautiful and wonderful as the bloom of any flower. The actual flower of the Buckeye tree is quite attractive in its own right but the return of life to my forest is long expected sight for sore eyes. To be honest, Buckeye is an early species and generally wakes before anything else but the others are not far behind. A second sign of the forest waking up today was a solitary earthworm. That means that the soil temperature is above 40 degrees on the shady side of the mountain. Normally when the soil is cooler we’ll see the worms gathered in clusters and not exploring alone. Winter is officially over! Welcome Spring!

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
