Our Own Little Island

Sunshine dances on the gentle waters of the highland delta as the big blue truck ebbs its way up the single lane road. As I emerged from behind the reeds the familiar honking of the local geese greets my ears. As I look up the wings are spread out in the March breeze. I instinctively knew that the geese were warning me not to approach their island. The geese are beautiful but territorial and especially if they have a nest nearby. The little island is only a few square feet but it’s all their’s. I can relate to their desire to be left alone in their peaceful setting among the reeds. Home is sacred place where the world can’t make too many demands. I’m sure that for a goose it’s important to not be disturbed while you’re simply feeling the soft mud under your toes or having a quiet swim on sun-kissed waters. The need for peaceful quiet time is universal to all life on earth. As soon as they realized that the big blue truck was firmly intent on remaining dry they settled down and returned to the pleasant activity of just being wild and free on their own little island.

Reaching For The New Light

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reaching For The Light 31721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Deep beneath the layers of leaves and duff the tiny roots feel the calling of the sun. The warmth of the new light kindles a refreshing of life in the long dormant forests. The little mottled leaf pushes back the dark blanket of yesterday’s glory to greet the new life of today.  But isn’t that how all of life goes? What was yesterday’s glory must be shed eventually. Certainly we need to rest beneath our accomplishments for while to recover our strength but eventually we have to leave that place in order to grow again. And although what rises above the surface is wonderful and beautiful it’s not really the core of our being. Our true self is the roots that grow unseen deep beneath the surface. The parts above are really only there to engage with the light and feed our roots.

March Wanderings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “March Wanderings 30420” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cool night air is filled with the chorus of the Spring Peepers as the mists fall gently on the mountain. The water condenses and pools into tiny rivers that criss-cross the hillside. Soon afterwards the sun breaks over the ridges to unveil the new world left behind by the gently falling water. It’s a good day for wandering around. All throughout the mountains the peepers songs have awoken tiny sprouts with only 1 or 2 small circular leaves. The soft green moss seems to have a new vibrancy as it slowly covers the stones and logs. The change is still in the air but in not too many days it will settle on the ground like the rain and our forests will be green again.

Memory Lingers

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Memory Lingers 31120bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cold March winds swirl above in the unsettled skies. Behind me the roar of the big trucks on the highway fade into the distance leaving only the echoes of passers-by. Life on the highway is only a faint moment to the observer. Several yards below that high pressure ribbon of swift destination and imposing concrete lays the old road with its bright yellow lines and rolling hills. Two lanes are the destination today.

Of course I’ve come to pay a visit to the old barn. She is an echo unto herself standing as the bridge between centuries. If I close my eyes and concentrate I can hear the chatter of those who worked the fields as they store the wealth of the landscape inside the lapped wood and tin roof. The work was hot and laborious but the bonds were strong between the helpers. All who gathered there became family. Joined not by blood but by sweat and a common goal achieved. Nations are fed by families. Families are those who join hearts as well as hands.

A Quiet Moment Of Connection

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Gentle Flow 31520” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck eases gently from the pavement to the gravel. As I roll down the window the aroma of my morning coffee is interrupted with scent of the moss mingled with that of the stone and the sounds of the gently flowing water. I confirm in my heart that this moment is mine and silence the playback from my tablet as I exit the truck. There are certain spots in this world that are like recharging stations. Some are awe inspiring landscapes like the Grand Canyon but most are just little groves and streams. The smaller ones are no less powerful. They’re just harder to find. I suppose that it’s human nature to look for a big God in big places where nature is overpowering and generally speaking God will meet us in those spots too. But it’s the still, small voice that speaks volumes. All we need is to stop and hear with the intention of listening. The stone is the same age everywhere that there is earth and the water touches all parts of the globe at one point in time. It’s all part of creation and it’s all connected. Including you and I. All we need to do is take a quiet moment to acknowledge the connection with nature and it’s creator.
