A Peaceful Stop Near Charlton Heights

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Flow Of Peace” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The morning sun is just above the mountains as the big blue truck finds the wide spot at Charlton Heights. I have always loved the crumbling old stone wall with its little cascade and nearby cave. Today I’ve elected to bring my tripod and attempt a long exposure. I fiddle with the settings a little and eventually get the look that want. Just a few feet away the morning rush traffic zips by. I maintain awareness for safety but otherwise block it out. All I need is a few minutes to lose myself in the flow of stream. The texture of the cut stone and the color of the vegetation. In the few moments of quiet between the sounds of the passing engines I can hear a black capped chickadee calling among the bare twigs. And a sapsucker tapping out his rhythms on a dead branch. I fight against the urge to abandon my responsibility and climb the wall to see what’s up stream but reason overtakes me as I wait for the shutter to close. Folding the tripod away and climbing back into the driver’s seat was the hardest part of my morning. I press the button on the armrest and the passenger window slides down with a whirr and I allow just a little bit more of the peaceful moment to flow into my being and this I carry until I can stop again.

Overflow

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Overflow 102219” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The hydroelectric dam at Glen Ferris is well integrated with natural beauty of Kanawha Falls. The lake formed by the same is often mirror smooth. The dam is an overflow dam and with the exception of that water that’s channed into the turbines it sweeps over the edge of dam. At the right angles it looks like a hole in the river. Below the dam the leading edge of the flow looks like liquid glass which shatters on the rocks below only to coalesce again as it makes it’s way to merge with the Ohio River.

A Few Thoughts On New Year’s Resolutions

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Wishing Pool” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I have stopped by the little pool at Glen Ferris as I often do. I only have a few minutes to catch a moment of peace. As I watched the water cascade down the rocks and collect in the little pool my mind begins to focus on the New Year and the tradition of making a resolution. You could almost draw a resolution out of a hat and it would mean as much. You see, most of the New Year’s resolutions are really just wishes.

I want be healthier.

I want to be more organized.

I want to learn something.

I want… fill in the blank. There’s plenty to choose from.

We do this as if New Year’s Day is some magical time that empowers you to achieve a goal guaranteed or you get a refund. But when you buy something with wishes then your refund is getting your wish back. I have come to the conclusion that a lot of these resolutions wishes are given to us by the expectations of others. Or more accurately, what we think other people expect from us. And if it’s not really something that we want for ourselves then we don’t really do the legwork. Or if we do then it’s only half hearted and it is never a priority.

After giving some of these things a little more thought I’ve decided that my New Year’s resolution this year be not waiting for the New Year to start working on the things that I want to change and to decide for myself what things I want to change in the first place.

Regardless of what the goals eventually turn out to be it should be something that is truly our goals so that we’ll be naturally motivated to make them happen. Anything else is just wishful thinking.

Filling Up. A Look At What We Fill Our Lives With & A Reaffirmation Of My Goals.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Filling Up” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Our lives are like vessels. Whatever our life containsis is what we have filled up with. Be it good or bad. That’s also going to effect what we have to pass on to others and what they have to pass on to us.

We’ve all known that person who just has to unload every time they come around. We might try to step in and help them out at first but after a while it gets tiresome. Have you ever wondered where all that negativity comes from? If we’re all vessels and carry whatever we’re filled with then why are some people so full of negativity? It has to be one of two things. Either they are filling from the wrong source or someone else is contaminating their vessel at some point in their lives. When I was a kid I use to hear adults say “consider the source ” whenever certain conversations came up. I always thought that phrase was in reference to the negative person but as I’ve gotten older I have come to consider that the negative person might be simply filling up from the wrong source.

When I started my blog a couple of years ago the first goal was to get my photography out in front of the public. The very next words out of my mouth was that “I want to bring as many people as possible into a positive frame of mind.” It’s one of the reasons why you’ll never see politically charged topics on my site. Regardless of anything else I want you to come away from the blog feeling like I have added value to your day. I want this site to be a source of good things that you can fill up with.

I realize that this particular post is a little bit of a deviation from my normal writing but as I stared at the feature image the thought of filling up a vessel was strong in my heart and I felt like it was time to reaffirm my mission for my new readers. Yes I do want to sell copies of the photos but just as important to me is providing inspiration and imparting something that makes your daily life a little better than it was before you opened the link. I want to pour good things into your vessels.

A Way Of Escape

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Quiet Moments ” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Sometimes all you can do is “go with the flow”. Not everything is going to be in our control. In fact most things are never going to be in our control. But what we can control is our reaction to circumstances. Now it’s honesty time here. I have not quite mastered the art of the smooth reaction to frustration yet. But I’m working on it. It’s not big things that get me. It’s the army of little things. I can be the person who remains calm at traffic accident generally speaking I know what to do and tend to take charge. But when that mosquito is buzzing in my ear… well, that sense of inner peace is totally busted. And if there’s more than one at a time or if they just keep coming that’s when I really need to go somewhere and repent… again. I used to marvel at all the older guys of my grandfather’s generation. They all seemed to be able to handle anything no matter what. Big things or a multitude of little things it didn’t seem to matter. They took it in stride. Was it because that with age testosterone levels wain and with that is the loss of aggression? Or, was it that fact that they were all World War Two veterans and battle hardened to point that nothing shook them? Certainly, these factors played a role in making them who they were. Being men of faith, they all had a rich spiritual life and there’s no doubt in my mind that was a big part of helping them keep their cool.

I often speak about those quiet places and moments when I have written posts to share with you. But the real secret is that it’s in these spots and times that I get to reset myself. It’s where I go to escape from the proverbial mosquitoes that won’t stop buzzing in my ear. I hope that in some way that I’ve been able to bring you along with me through the visual of my photos.

Tonight’s Feature looks like it’s some far away stream in the untouched portion of my Appalachian Mountains. In fact, it’s about fifty feet away from the main highway. Now, we’re not going to escape from the real mosquitoes here but those proverbial ones don’t seem to be able to leave the pavement. My point is that when things start to get to you that there’s usually a place to escape from the little things that come all at once. And, sometimes the best way to get that peace back is to remove yourself from the situation and spend some time with God.
