The Walk Of A Lifetime

The morning sun peeks through the clouds and the crashing of waves echo through the salty air. The cool water washes over bare feet that seek the solace and freedom of a still empty shore. The only voices that break the rhythm of the tide are the cries of the seagulls. In this place and at this time the only thoughts he has are his and his alone. His heart speaks in whispers and spins dreams of the life ahead and of her. She has not left his mind since the first time he saw her backlit by the afternoon sun that caught in her long curls that made it look like she was glowing. She pretended not to notice his stare but he was trapped by moment. He was a man frozen in time by the manifestation of destiny. As he walks he relives the first date and the second and every date after that. Soon he has his answer as he spotted the second set of footprints heading for the fishing pier just ahead. He knew that it had to be her because even the way she walked was forever burned into his memory. His pace quickened as he spotted her standing by the pier looking out to see if she could spot the dolphins playing in the surf. She worked in the little shop at the entrance to the pier and it was her morning ritual to have a cup of coffee and watch the sea before opening the store. She was expecting him as he walked up behind her. She didn’t even have to look to know that it was him. Her eyes never left the sea as she handed him the second cup of coffee that she was holding in her left hand. As he accepted the cup he clasped her hand ever so gently causing her to turn to face him. She searched his face for a moment confused about what was happening until he produced the modest ring from his shirt pocket. Before he could form the words she said yes. That day the little shop at entrance to the pier opened up a little later than normal but nobody seemed to mind. All of the regular patrons were amazed that it had taken this long for her most loyal customer to pop the question that he’d never really gotten to ask. Exactly one month to the date they were married on the end of the fishing pier. Even the dolphins turned up to playfully express their well wishes at the moment that the vows were exchanged. They settled in and worked hard and eventually they bought the pier and spent the rest of their lives watching the dolphins play in surf and enjoying their morning coffee by the sea.

Escape

I think most people resist confinement. In my area winter keeps me inside most of the time and by February I’m feeling claustrophobic. I feel the need to escape up some mountain pass well away from the noise of civilization. I could load up the Big Blue Truck and drive until the road ends and then drive a little more. But once I reach the top of the mountain then what? I could park on the ridge and hitch a ride in a hot air balloon!

It’s really all about finding some peace of mind in a world that places constant demands on your attention. However, turning myself into a real life Phileas Fogg does have a certain amount of appeal. I can imagine myself floating high above the mountains and snapping beautiful aerial landscapes as I pass. I could write notes to my friends and fold them into paper airplanes and drop them as I pass by. And, because Amazon delivers by drone I could resupply without landing. The two biggest problems about this kind of escape from the noisy world would be plumbing and drive through windows. Dealing with a drive through window could be resolved by simply lowering a bucket by rope. Plumbing on the other hand might take a little more creativity. Of course one would have to land occasionally. What good is being able to freely travel the world if you don’t land and fully experience new places? Perhaps I can design my balloon with a bay for my big blue truck. I could land in a open field and drive into the city long enough to enjoy a show and have a meal. Then as soon as I’ve had my fill of civilization I could return to the blue wilderness among the clouds. But eventually even the most ardent adventurer gets homesick. No matter how much you enjoy going wherever the wind takes you that longing for the green forests and blue mountains of home. Perhaps my balloon would have a propeller and a rudder for the specific purpose of returning to the Allegheny plateau and the people that I love.

The Make Believe Robots

I’ve always loved the coin operated binoculars found in parks and recreation areas. I’ve commented before that they remind me of the goofy robots from every B science fiction movie that I’ve ever seen. Maybe it’s the combination of wrought iron and chrome or the fact that they seem to have that expressionless face that makes me think I should be seeing the saucers at any moment. Especially when I notice the one closest to my lens seems have his head cocked to one side as if trying to understand the human. And I can’t really blame him for being perplexed at the middle aged man with the camera who took his time making sure that all the “robots” were looking at the camera and commanded them to say cheese as he snapped the shutter. I’m a huge advocate of not taking adulthood so seriously that you can’t act a little silly in public. Especially when you have all of these blank stares looking back at you. Before gathering my gear and moving to the subject I gave my make believe robot commander the name “B-9” and instructed him to wait for the next human. I’m certain that he and his brethren stood there at full attention until a coin was dropped in the slot. Today we have real world robots that live in the internet and interact with us via our phones and tablets. We even have fully autonomous vehicles and aircraft but to me nothing says robot like a blank stare on a chrome face.

A Busy Day With The Honeybees

The Jewelweed behind my house moves like the wind is blowing but there’s no wind in any other part of my yard. I decided to step outside to see what was going on and the hum could be heard at a distance. I knew at once that it was the swarm. The flowers teeming with thousands of little wings darting to and fro with ” saddlebags” full of pollen. At one point in my life this would have been a terrifying experience but since facing up to my fears and learning more about these little ladies it’s a joy to see them. It was almost miraculous to see such a large number of honeybees because this photo was taken when colony collapse disorder was in all the headlines. You see, almost all life on earth depends on the honeybees to pollinate flowers and grow food. Even the predators depend on the herbivores who depend on the propagation of the plants. Since gaining my confidence around the honeybees I’ve found that they react to my presence differently as well. They no longer dive bomb me in an effort to bluff me into leaving. Instead they either ignore me completely or on some occasions they seem to be trying to figure out who I am. One time last year a honeybee followed me into the house, buzzed around the living room and then waited by the door like a puppy waiting to go outside.

I’ve discovered that standing back a bit with a long lens that photographing bees in flight was a good way to practice action shots. They only slow down when they land and they never really stop. Instead of causing anxiety it now brings a strange sense of peace to watch them working.

Skipping Stones

Nothing brings to mind the carefree days of childhood than skipping stones. Before cable tv, before the internet and before Fortnight we would hike down to Collison Creek where the stream was just wide enough to make a flat stone bounce and skip along the water’s surface. It wasn’t really wide enough to go for long distance. Making it to the other side of the creek was fairly easy so we got creative. In some spots the water flows around large rocks that made perfect bumpers. The object was to play the bank shot by skipping a stone into the bumper and making it land in a certain place. Sometimes we could get one to skip on the rebound after bouncing off of the bumper stone. Other skipping stone games involved landing a stone on a sand bar and a second player would try knock it off with his stone. This one lead to another incarnation that we called “soldier’s fort”. We would wade out to the sand bar and stack rocks like cairns. Usually the stack was only 2 or 3 stones high. Then twigs were gathered from the forest floor and stuck in the sand like a palisade. The object was to crash through the wall by skipping a stone into it until you could knock down a stack of rocks. We never really kept a score. It was all about finding something to do in an age where you had to create your own fun.
