The First Date Lasts Forever

The old man walked out of his house and shuffled off into his garden. With trembling hands he began to sort through the prickly shoots and branches if the rose bush he planted sixty years ago. As he worked he subconsciously began to hum that familiar song that was on his car radio all those years ago when he picked her up for their first date. He could still see her long hair pulled back into a ponytail and smell the perfume that she wore on that night. As he explored the bush for just the right bloom he found himself dancing to the tune of the their first slow dance while his little dog cocked his head trying to understand what was going on. One by one he snipped and gently placed the cuttings in his basket and carried them to his shed. The best roses were destined to be placed in the turned and hand rubbed wooden vase that he completed a few weeks before. He recounted their first date to the dog as he worked. He described her smile and way she giggled when made that joke. The little dog laid on the rug and kept his eyes fixed on his master as if transfixed by the story. The old man continued to work diligently clearing space in the shed and making last minute adjustments to the small room. Finally he took the remaining rose pedals and scattered them on the freshly cleaned floor. “Okay boy. Bring her.” He commanded to his dog. The little wasted no time running into the house and tugging at the him of her pants excitedly like he always did when he wanted her to follow. Her eyes widened and she smiled that same smile that she did the first time he pulled up into her father’s driveway for the high school Valentine’s Day dance all those years ago. He reached over and pushed play on his phone and started their song as he asked her to dance. She leaned into his chest and held her close as they gently swayed into the night.

The Girl Next Door

Hello Friends! Tonight’s image is titled “Surprise Visitor” for the bumblebee hiding under the flower and really has little to do with the story. However, if you want to purchase a copy please see the instructions at the bottom of the page.

He sat down somewhere between his yesterdays and his tomorrows. Something has changed and he was trying to figure it out. Before today she was just the bratty girl next door. The one who made mud pies and climbed trees. The girl who just last summer beat him in a wrestling match and made him say uncle before she would let him up. But today when she walked by in the school cafeteria she didn’t smell like mud pies and she didn’t move like a wrestler. She smelled like strawberries and seemed to float as she stepped. Things would be different from now on. A few days later he swallowed the lump in his throat and asked her to the dance. The first dance was awkward but eventually they moved as one. Sometime later that night she gave him his first kiss beneath the tree that they used to play in. It was just a little peck on the cheek but it made him feel like superman. That night he took his pocket knife and carved their initials into the tree. The heart shape wasn’t perfect but it was there. As time passed she would wear his spare jersey as she cheered for him at the high school football games. She maintained the yellow ribbon around their tree the whole time he was in the army and every day she touched their initials inside the misshapen heart and paid attention to the “4 ever” just inside the V of the heart. “A promise is a promise she whispers. One day when she came home from work and went out to check the yellow ribbon she found an engagement ring threaded through it. She heard his voice voice from the back door say “A promise is a promise “. After that day they were never separated again. By the next Spring they were married beneath that same oak and raised a family.

The little girl sat at the picnic table beneath the large lower branches looking at the odd somewhat heart shaped scar on the trunk. Her grandmother came out and sat next her. Looking up with her big blue eyes she asked about the Valentine carved into tree as her brother bounded from a branch. The grandmother smiled and said “Why don’t I tell you while we make a mud pie for your grandfather”.

The Walk Of A Lifetime

Hello Friends! Tonight’s image is titled “The Walk Of A Lifetime” and was taken in 2010 in Myrtle Beach.

The morning sun peeks through the clouds and the crashing of waves echo through the salty air. The cool water washes over bare feet that seek the solace and freedom of a still empty shore. The only voices that break the rhythm of the tide are the cries of the seagulls. In this place and at this time the only thoughts he has are his and his alone. His heart speaks in whispers and spins dreams of the life ahead and of her. She has not left his mind since the first time he saw her backlit by the afternoon sun that caught in her long curls that made it look like she was glowing. She pretended not to notice his stare but he was trapped by moment. He was a man frozen in time by the manifestation of destiny. As he walks he relives the first date and the second and every date after that. Soon he has his answer as he spotted the second set of footprints heading for the fishing pier just ahead. He knew that it had to be her because even the way she walked was forever burned into his memory. His pace quickened as he spotted her standing by the pier looking out to see if she could spot the dolphins playing in the surf. She worked in the little shop at the entrance to the pier and it was her morning ritual to have a cup of coffee and watch the sea before opening the store. She was expecting him as he walked up behind her. She didn’t even have to look to know that it was him. Her eyes never left the sea as she handed him the second cup of coffee that she was holding in her left hand. As he accepted the cup he clasped her hand ever so gently causing her to turn to face him. She searched his face for a moment confused about what was happening until he produced the modest ring from his shirt pocket. Before he could form the words she said yes. That day the little shop at entrance to the pier opened up a little later than normal but nobody seemed to mind. All of the regular patrons were amazed that it had taken this long for her most loyal customer to pop the question that he’d never really gotten to ask. Exactly one month to the date they were married on the end of the fishing pier. Even the dolphins turned up to playfully express their well wishes at the moment that the vows were exchanged. They settled in and worked hard and eventually they bought the pier and spent the rest of their lives watching the dolphins play in surf and enjoying their morning coffee by the sea.

Mental Vacation

Feeling the warm sun on my face today was very welcome change indeed. I wasn’t really able to get out and explore due to my day job but I able to step outside for a few minutes and breath the fresh air while focusing on tonight’s feature image of Kanawha Falls. Mentally I place myself in a comfortable spot near the water and pull up a large piece of driftwood for a seat. The breeze coming off of the falls is charged with oxygen and the sounds of the river pushes away all of mental clutter. Looking deeper into the scene brings me to the base of the falls where I can feel the spray. The large fish drift by beneath me going no place in particular. Time loses all meaning, as the moment encompasses eternity. To the outside world it’s just a few minutes but to me touching that moment was just enough to leave me refreshed. The buzzing of my smartphone summons my to return from my instant vacation but as the season continues to change there will more opportunities for more pictures to fuel my imagination. For now I’ll close my app and return to mundane world of an office chair while carrying the sunshine inside in the form of the a photo.

How We Made Post Updates Back In Day

Ecclesiastes 1:9 teaches us that “there is no new thing under the sun.” One might think that a status update via public post is a new idea but that’s not quite true. There was a time when you could find out what was going on in town by reading it on a public post. It wasn’t always an actual wooden fence post like the one in the feature image but there was “status updates” and even fake news. ( Trust me, I called 867-5309 and they have no idea who Jenny is! 😉) Even in old days we had trolling. Often the inflammatory remarks were scrawled on side of a bus stop or in a phone booth. (Similar to T.A.R.D.I.S. from Dr.Who only the same size inside and out.) The toughest part was changing your status. That would require a can of spray paint or sandpaper and in the most extreme cases an angle grinder might be needed. It wasn’t really uncommon to walk into a school gym locker room and see the coach supervising a young man as he scrubbed away at the inside of a locker. Several years ago I acquired an antique school principal’s desk. It was in decent shape and I still own it today but when I pulled out the drawers to clean it up I found a treasure trove of “statuses” under some of the drawers. ( a few that aren’t appropriate for public display). It seems that we are hardwired to leave our marks behind. At first I thought that I should clean up graffiti from under the desk drawers but then I thought about the discovery I was robbing from some future archaeologist as they try to decipher the codes. I also have an interest in petroglyphs. Those mysterious drawings carved into stone from the forgotten past. The real anthropologists say that all of them are “shamanic visions” and “hunting magic” but I have to wonder. If we could really read them fluently how many petroglyphs would read like a Facebook feed? Is that cave painting really just “caveman Bob” letting us know that the wife made the most awesome woolly mammoth BBQ last night? Remember that there’s no new thing under the sun.
