Making Time Away From Clocks

As I make my way down the long wooden staircase that leads to the base of the falls I’m mentally transported to a different world. A place where there are no time cards. A world where the only clock is the arch of the sun and the day belongs to the one who lives in it. That’s really the trick isn’t it? To have a little more life in the day? As the water flows over the rocks at Blackwater Falls the roar of cascade overtakes the noisy parking lot on the canyon rim and the modern world is pushed farther away. It’s easy to see why the ancient world explained creation as being made from only four elements of Earth (The stone cliffs), Wind (The breeze coming off of the falls), Fire (The warm sun beaming down) and Water ( The river itself). These things were the most powerful forces in existence outside of God himself. I recently read a headline that said that doctors in Scotland were now prescribing exposure to nature as a medicine. I definitely concur with them. God in all of his love and wisdom created a perfect world for his children. Even in it’s current fallen state it still exists to nurture and sustain his children. It stands to reason that in order to be healthy we need a certain amount of unspoiled nature in our lives.

Once more I’m fully invigorated by my time out from the world of ticking clocks and constant bombardment of ads on T.V. and whatever other media is encountered in the modern era and it’s time to make my way back up the mountain.

Rust And Rebirth

It’s been a while since I have seen a train on this set of tracks. The strong railroad steel is covered with a growing layer of rust and the Sycamore trees are steadily reclaiming their territory. I can tell by the size of the shoots that it’s been about two years give or take since one of the powerful engines have come thundering down the line. The section of tracks next to this set still has a shiny surface and there’s no underbrush growing between the cross ties which means that trains are still around but they now travel to a different destination. Which leaves me to wonder if this section of tracks is destined to become a hiking trail? I’ve never really walked this set of tracks but I’ve driven but I driven through some of the same countryside and there’s a lot of potential. It’s remote enough in some places to be interesting but close enough to civilization for a measure of safety. Some of the backcountry is rugged and there’s bound to be a few steep climbs for a challenge. Of course all this is just recognizing the opportunity and wondering what the next phase is for my Appalachian Mountains. Whatever the future holds is really up to the people who live here. I think it be a real shame to just set back and watch the weeds continue to grow.

Seeking A Sign, My Natural Calendar

Today cold winter weather has me longing for green trees, brightly colored flowers and a warm breeze. If I concentrate hard enough I can almost smell the honeysuckle. As usual, the second week of January finds me done with winter. Santa Claus has come and gone, the festive lights are put away for another year and Christmas candy has all been eaten. What’s a person to do in the digital age other than pull out some photos that warm the soul even if the body still feels the chilly air. This is time I begin to watch the buds on the trees. It’s really early to see any sign of change. Normally it won’t be until March before the trees start to wake up from the long slumber that began in late October. But, like a schoolboy waiting for the last bell to ring I wil watch the clock. The deep frost is the first sign of change. That began today. The next phase is the deep snow. Usually that comes between the last two weeks of January and the first two weeks of February. Between Valentine’s Day and the end of March it’s a little random but the March winds mean that the season is changing. Next we start noticing less of a need for heavy jackets in the last week of March but don’t be fooled, that’s just a setup for the Easter snow. My guess is that there will be bunny tracks in a powdery dusting of winters last hoorah this year. Historically speaking, that’s it. Then the warmth comes back to the mountains and the honeysuckle blooms for real. I really don’t have much to base this on other than recollection and gut feeling but it helps me look for the next goal as the snow falls outside of my window.

Playful Waters

Gently the water flows through the stones dancing and giggling through the mountains. I begin to wonder what stories the stream has that brings it such playful joy as it travels. Perhaps it overheard what the trees on the ridge line were whispering to each other as it passed by. In my imagination I will always envision the stream with a playful childlike innocence. I can almost hear it taunting the forest in that childish voice saying “You can’t catch me!” Gleefully it zigs and zags as it carries the secrets of the trees to the Gulf of Mexico sharing its giggle with every stone and pebble it touches. If I strain my ears just enough I can almost hear the secret myself as the mischievous stream continues to giggle. The largest stones however are not amused. They will not be moved by such foolishness and will never repeat such gossip. They stare on blankly as if the stream never spoke a word. The pebbles on the other hand seem interested enough to try and keep up. They move along on the bottom of stream for short distances trying to keep up but eventually they settle down and forget the whole affair. Would you like to know the secret? Well then. You’ll just have to go outside and listen to the trees whisper and the water giggle as it passes by because I could never repeat such foolish gossip either.

A Winter’s Refreshing At Cathedral Falls

As the evening sun begins to retreat behind the mountains it grants one last gaze into the cove at the foot of Gauley Mountain. The soft light spreads through the forest floor as wood and stone are bathed in the cascade of Cathedral Falls. The oxygen charged air within the natural cathedral enhances the sense of peace as I cross the wooden footbridge. Time itself seems to slow to a halt as the elements of nature coalesce into my frame. It’s been said that God first set the word of His testimony into nature. I believe that is true because as I look at the beauty He created for us to live in his love for us is written on every stone, carved into every tree, bound into every drop of water and energized by every ray of light. With my spirit renewed in this natural sanctuary it’s time to replace the cap on my lens and return to the big blue truck and head home.
